In a world where many business ventures lean towards conventional ideas, some young initiatives stand out by breaking the norm and offering a unique vision that blends art with nature. Among these projects, “Oman Butterfly” emerges as a creative model that transforms a delicate creature like the butterfly into an artistic expression carrying both aesthetic and human value.
Behind this project is Sara al Rahbi, an Omani entrepreneur who found inspiration and passion in butterflies, shaping her own distinctive artistic path. Sara explains that the idea did not begin as a clear plan, but rather as a simple personal experience. She started by raising caterpillars and observing their transformation into butterflies. After releasing them into nature, she would later find some of them after their life cycle had ended, keeping them without initially knowing how to preserve them.
This curiosity led her to research and learn online, where she discovered various techniques for preserving butterflies. Through experimentation and continuous development, she created her own method, gradually turning her hobby into a fully realised project with a unique artistic identity.
Sara believes her passion for butterflies stems from her deep reflection on their nature and life cycle, which she sees as a symbol of beauty and transformation. Their colours and intricate details always captured her attention and over time, this admiration evolved into a desire to understand them more deeply and preserve their beauty in an artistic form.
Regarding the sourcing of butterflies, she explains that she works with specialised suppliers outside Oman who operate legally through butterfly farms. She emphasises that this aspect is very important to her, as all butterflies used in her work have completed their natural life cycle, ensuring no harm is done to the environment.
As for the preservation process, Sara describes it as a delicate task that requires patience and precision. It begins with careful drying methods, followed by gently spreading and positioning the wings to maintain the butterfly’s natural appearance. Each step must be carried out with great care to avoid damaging such a fragile creature.
Creatively, Sara relies on natural materials such as high-quality glass frames, dried flowers and carefully selected backgrounds that complement each butterfly. She aims for each piece to evoke a sense of nature within interior spaces, allowing people to feel connected to nature wherever they are.
Visual harmony plays a key role in the success of “Oman Butterfly” Sara focuses on colour coordination and overall composition, ensuring that each butterfly’s beauty is highlighted without exaggeration. She believes that simplicity often creates the most powerful impact and therefore strives for balance and elegance in every piece.
Despite the challenges she faces, particularly in sourcing rare or seasonal butterflies, Sara views these difficulties as motivation to continue. Finding such specimens requires time, effort and constant communication with suppliers, and sometimes involves long waiting periods.
One of the most memorable experiences in her journey was her encounter with what she calls the “Beauty Butterfly” during a trip to Türkiye. While walking through a crowded and busy street filled with noise and smoke, she was surprised when a butterfly landed on her hand, an unexpected and meaningful moment. She describes it as a sign that encouraged her to continue pursuing her passion, reinforcing her connection to the world of butterflies.
In terms of public reception, the project initially sparked curiosity and even some surprise due to its unconventional nature. However, once people saw the intricate details firsthand, their reactions turned into admiration. Sara notes that many now view her creations as unique artistic pieces and meaningful gifts, which has encouraged her to keep growing and evolving.
Looking ahead, Sara aspires for “Oman Butterfly” to expand and become widely recognised both within Oman and internationally. She aims for it to be the first project of its kind in the Sultanate of Oman, while continuing to develop her products in ways that reflect a contemporary Omani artistic identity.
With passion and determination, “Oman Butterfly” stands as an inspiring example of how creativity and respect for nature can come together — transforming small details into meaningful works of art that tell stories of beauty and transformation.
