The world's highest bridge has opened to traffic in the south-western Chinese province of Guizhou, cutting travel time through the mountainous Huajiang Canyon from about two hours to just a few minutes, state media reported on Sunday.
The Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge rises 625 metres above the riverbed, roughly matching the height of the 632-metre Shanghai Tower, China's tallest skyscraper, according to the official Xinhua news agency.
The suspension bridge has a main span of 1,420 metres.
Construction took three years and cost more than 2 billion yuan(around $280 million), Chinese state media said.
Eighteen of the world's 20 highest bridges are in China. But such large-scale infrastructure projects remain contentious, as many provinces are deeply indebted, a burden increasingly weighing on national economic growth. Guizhou ranks among China's most heavily in debted regions.
