Muscat, Sept 26
The Sultanate of Oman’s national para-athletics team is taking part in the 2025 World Para Athletics Championships, hosted by the Indian capital, New Delhi, from September 26 to October 5 at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium. This event is considered the largest individual sporting competition for athletes with disabilities worldwide, bringing together top Paralympians across various disciplines.
Oman is represented by an official delegation from the Oman Paralympic Committee, featuring athletes Mohammed bin Jameel al Mashaykhi and Taha bin Abdullah al Harassi. The delegation is headed by Rahma bint Salem al Hajriyah, with Hani bin Salem al Shamakhi serving as physiotherapist.
The Omani delegation attended the official opening ceremony, where they met with Isa bin Saleh al Shibani, Oman’s Ambassador to India and Minister Plenipotentiary Nawaf bin Abdullah Baamar, who both expressed their support and encouragement, wishing the team success and a distinguished representation of Omani sport.
Upon arrival, the athletes immediately began training to raise their technical readiness and adapt to the stadium conditions ahead of their competitions. Paralympian Taha al Harassi will compete in the 100m sprint and long jump, while champion Mohammed al Mashaykhi will participate in shot put and club throw, aiming to achieve strong results and add new accomplishments to Oman’s record on the global stage.
In an exclusive statement, Omani athlete Mohammed bin Jameel al Mashaykhi expressed his pride in representing the Sultanate of Oman at this global event, saying "competing at the World Championships is every athlete’s dream. I am proud to be here to raise my country’s flag high. Over the past months, I’ve undergone intensive training programmes and I aspire to deliver my best possible performance in shot put and club throw. We know the competition is tough, but we have great confidence that we can achieve honourable results".
Al Mashaykhi added that the strong support from the Paralympic Committee is a major motivation to continue giving his all, emphasising that the main goal is to prove the ability of Omani athletes with disabilities to compete at the highest international levels.
