Women are the real architects of society and Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was right when he said: “Woman is the companion of man, gifted with equal mental capacity. Women have played a remarkable role in social, cultural and political life of the world from the very early times.”
Today, we have many women presidents, ministers, ambassadors and business leaders.
Women in Oman achieved what other women in other parts of the world could not achieve. They contributed so much to the well-being of their families, communities and country. From the early 1990s, the government has made great efforts to involve Omani women in the government and share responsibility with men. Women were nominated to participate in the election of Majlis Ash’shura in 1997 with two winning the seats. In several of his speeches, His Majesty Sultan Qaboos emphasised the importance of integrating women into public life.
Omani women have proved themselves in the political, social, cultural and economic fields. They actively contributed in the national development process. They became ministers, under-secretaries, ambassadors and some other top posts in the government.
His Majesty the Sultan honoured Omani women by designating, October 17, as Omani Women’s Day.
This day is inspired by the national symposium held in Suhar coinciding with His Majesty Sultan Qaboos’ annual ‘Meet the People’ tour to acknowledge women’s contribution to the country’s social, political and economic progress. This symposium was organised in response to the Royal Directives to highlight the role of Omani women’s great efforts in building the nation along with men.
Therefore, they commemorate this day to express their thanks and gratitude to His Majesty; the man who believed in every Omani woman that she can play a fundamental role in the blessed Omani Renaissance. He believed in women as successful partners along with men in contributing to serve the nation. In fact, women in Oman proved it right that they are capable of sharing Oman’s development process with men.
Omani women enjoy rights to partake in all walks of life in Oman. Moreover, men and women enjoy equal rights and opportunities. The high posts women achieved in different fields reflect their sincere efforts in building the nation.
