SUHAR, OCT 29

Emerging writers, poets and performers took the centre stage as the 28th Literary and Artistic Forum concluded in Sohar bringing together a diverse range of creative voices through competitions, workshops and performances designed to strengthen Oman’s cultural landscape.

Held in Al Batinah North under the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth, the forum concluded under the auspices of Mohammed bin Sulaiman al Kindi, Governor of Al Batinah North, with the announcement of winners in the literary and artistic competitions.

The closing programme celebrated achievements across several disciplines, including classical and popular poetry, short stories, theatre and singing, reflecting the breadth of creative expression among participants.

A total of 60 participants competed in the literary categories of classical poetry, popular poetry and short stories, while the monodrama competition featured five theatrical productions (Before the Curtain Opens, The Day After Love, The Missing Papers Register, Statue, and Ink and Paper).

The forum placed emphasis on learning and professional exchange. Critical discussion sessions led by judging panel members, specialised poetry and short-story workshops, and a gathering of visual artists offered participants opportunities to refine their skills, exchange perspectives and engage with different creative practices. A short-story exhibition also formed part of the closing programme.

Moosa bin Abdullah al Qassabi, General-Director of the General-Directorate of Culture, Sports and Youth in Al Batinah North, said the forum’s continued presence over 28 editions reflected its importance as a space where creative talent could develop, compete and connect with wider audiences.

He highlighted the forum’s role in supporting literary and artistic initiatives, nurturing emerging talent and strengthening cultural engagement across the Sultanate of Oman.

Sohar’s long-standing literary heritage adds significance to the event.

Historically associated with scholars, poets and intellectuals, the city continues to provide a setting in which cultural traditions can meet contemporary forms of expression. The forum’s conclusion reinforces the importance of sustained platforms for young creators, enabling their work to reach audiences while contributing to Oman’s wider cultural development.
