Taylor Swift fans have paid $25 for pieces of rubbish collected near the pop star’s wedding to American football player Travis Kelce.

New York artist Justin Gignac gathered the discarded items from streets surrounding Madison Square Garden, where the couple reportedly hosted a glamorous ceremony attended by hundreds of celebrity guests.

The collection included bottle caps, straws, utensils, police caution tape, cigarette butts, ring-shaped sweets and a single left AirPod.

All 50 items sold within 24 hours after being listed individually on Gignac’s website, New York City Garbage.

“It’s getting a lot of Swifties who just want a tangential piece of the wedding,” Gignac told AFP.

Each object, described online as a “sculpture”, was sealed inside a small plastic cube to prevent smells or leaks. Gignac said the sales had earned him $1,250 and that he might offer more items.

The artist, who also sells other pieces of New York rubbish, said he wanted to preserve a moment that attracted worldwide attention.

“I try to commemorate cultural moments in New York City, and this seemed to be a big one,” he said, describing the pieces as small time capsules.

Some items were tied into knots to emphasise the wedding theme.

Gignac stressed that the rubbish was collected outside the security barriers surrounding Madison Square Garden and did not come from inside the venue.

The wedding drew intense interest from Swift’s fans, some of whom travelled to New York hoping to catch a glimpse of the singer. Commentators described the celebrity-filled event as a “royal wedding”. — AFP
