MUSCAT: The University of Technology and Applied Sciences (UTAS) has launched its Drone Laboratories Project, establishing three specialised laboratories dedicated to drone programming and manufacturing at its campuses in Muscat, Al Musannah, and Nizwa. The initiative provides students across the University's branches with direct access to one of the most prominent emerging technology fields through advanced technical infrastructure.
The project reflects the University's ongoing commitment to enhancing students' practical and applied skills in programming, manufacturing and operating unmanned aerial systems, while strengthening the research and innovation ecosystem to prepare highly qualified national talent capable of competing in the labour market.
The laboratories are the result of a strategic partnership with the private sector, represented by Ben Faranas Company, one of the leading firms specialising in drone technologies. The project is jointly supervised by the University's Electronic Systems Sector, Student Services, and the Executive Committee for Digital Transformation Initiatives, ensuring a practical framework that bridges academic learning with market needs and industry requirements.
The project is also supported by the UTAS's Digital Transformation Programme, which places strong emphasis on building national capabilities, adopting emerging technologies, and fostering an environment that promotes innovation and development, thereby contributing to strengthening the foundations of the national digital economy.
The Drone Laboratories represent a significant addition to the University's research infrastructure, enabling students to gain hands-on experience with the latest drone manufacturing and autonomous flight technologies in state-of-the-art facilities. The initiative further reinforces the University's institutional approach of integrating education, scientific research and innovation within a comprehensive learning environment.
