Muscat: As seasonal changes bring a rise in respiratory illnesses, health professionals are highlighting the distinction between the common cold and seasonal flu to help the public better understand their symptoms.

While both conditions affect the respiratory system and may begin with similar signs such as cough, sore throat and congestion, seasonal flue, caused by the Influenza virus, is typically more intense and develops suddenly.

Patients with flu often experience high fever, body aches, headaches and pronounced fatigue, whereas a common cold usually appears gradually and remains mild, with sneezing and nasal congestion being more prominent.

Doctors note that colds generally resolve within a few days with rest and fluids, while flu symptoms may last longer and occasionally require medical attention.

Maintaining good hygiene, adequate rest and proper hydration are recommended to support recovery and reduce the spread of infection within the community.
