MUSCAT, JUNE 22

Over 400 patients who are the beneficiaries of the Zakat fund are expected to receive the free medical treatment at private hospitals this year, according to the Ministry of Awqaf and Religious Affairs (MoARA).

Free medical treatment for the Zakat beneficiaries was launched in line with the directives of His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik to allocate funds for the treatment of the Zakat beneficiaries, in association with the Ministry of Health and Ministry of Awqaf and Religious Affairs (MoARA), through the Endowment Health Foundation ‘Athar’.

Hilal al Sarmi, head of the Ather programme, said, “These royal directives aim to provide treatment for those eligible for Zakat, thereby strengthening the spirit of participation, a deeply rooted characteristic of Omani society." "These generous directives also underscore the importance of upholding the values of solidarity and giving, enhancing quality of life, bridging the healthcare gap, and accelerating access to healthcare services for the Zakat beneficiaries and all segments of the society. Last year alone, 221 Zakat beneficiaries availed the benefits of the Programme,” he added.

The Ministry of Awqaf and Religious Affairs sponsored 31,642 families through 66 community Zakat committees and the ministry currently manages this distribution and facilitates specialised medical treatment and charity payments online. These families were supported with Zakah funds and community committees, distributing an estimated RO 16 million. In addition, the Ministry of Awqaf and Religious Affairs, in coordination with the Ministry of Health, offers specialised medical registration programmes to Zakah beneficiaries for treatments in public and private institutions.

“Eligible families and individuals can apply or verify their statuses by visiting their local state-level Zakat Committees during official working hours. Registration can be done on the websites of MoH or MoARA or by scanning the QR code provided to the beneficiaries. They can avail free medical treatment at more than 10 private hospitals with which the ministry has come to an agreement,” Al Sarmi added.

Registration for treatment applications from Zakat beneficiaries registered with the ministry will begin at the start of July and continue until mid-August, with treatment procedures commencing at the beginning of September 2026, for the second phase of the initiative, which also includes performing surgical procedures and diagnostic radiology services in private hospitals across all governorates of the Sultanate of Oman.
