MUSCAT: The Royal Oman Police (ROP) launched traffic safety campaigns across various governorates as part of the 38th edition of Gulf Traffic Week 2026, themed "Cross Safely".

During the week-long safety campaigns, the Al Batinah North Governorate Police Command established traffic safety checkpoints in Suhar to provide advice to road users, aiming to reduce accidents and educate pedestrians and jaywalkers.

Additionally, a special children's theatre was opened at the Traffic Week exhibition in Al Waha Mall, offering educational segments using engaging and interactive methods, as well as Virtual Reality devices.

"Safety is the responsibility of everyone, and we are committed to individual and societal safety. We have chosen the theme for this year's campaign as 'I cross safely', with a focus on pedestrians and those who venture into wadis during floods. In emphasising safe road crossing, we are also highlighting the dangers of crossing wadis during rainfall. Statistics show that reckless crossings have resulted in loss of life and property during such conditions," said Lieutenant Colonel Dr Saif bin Ahmed al Ramadhani, Director of the Executive Office of the National Committee for Road Safety.

In Al Dakhiliyah Governorate, the activities of Gulf Traffic Week were launched at the historic 'Al Aqr' in Nizwa, under the auspices of Dr Said bin Harib al Lamki, Under-Secretary of the Ministry of Health for Health Affairs. Events accompanying Gulf Traffic Week include an awareness exhibition at the Traffic Safety Institute, along with awareness lectures and traffic-related activities.

In Al Wusta Governorate, celebrations were held under the auspices of Shaikh Mohammed bin Ali al Ghufaili, Wali of Haima, who spoke about traffic safety to an audience comprising people from different walks of life. The patron of the event toured the exhibition, reviewed efforts to raise awareness and reduce traffic accidents, and honoured participants in the week's activities.
