MUSCAT: The Zakat and Charity Committee in the Wilayat of Barka received a significant community support contribution from Barka Desalination Company, comprising 21 electric wheelchairs designated for people with disabilities. The initiative reflects growing collaboration between the private sector and charitable organisations, aimed at enhancing the quality of life and independence of beneficiaries.

The handover ceremony was held in the presence of Eng Masoud bin Said al Hashmi, Governor of Al Batinah South, and Sayyid Tariq bin Mahmoud al Busaidy, Wali of Barka, along with a number of officials and stakeholders.

The committee stated that the distribution of the wheelchairs will follow a structured plan prioritising individuals from low-income families registered under its programmes, in coordination with the Social Development Department in the wilayat.

The initiative also aims to replace outdated manual wheelchairs with modern electric ones, enabling smoother mobility and easing daily challenges faced by beneficiaries.

Asim bin Ali bin Salem al Rashdi, CEO of Barka Desalination Company, said the initiative aligns with the company’s commitment to strengthening its community engagement efforts in Barka. He noted that empowering people with disabilities remains a key priority, adding that providing smart electric wheelchairs will significantly improve mobility and independence.

Dr Saleh bin Hamad bin Khamis al Alawi, Director of Social Responsibility at the company, emphasised that teamwork and collaboration are essential to achieving meaningful social impact. He added that overcoming challenges faced by people with disabilities transforms shared goals into tangible outcomes, fostering a more inclusive and productive environment.
