MUSCAT: The Sultanate of Oman joined the world's countries to mark International Women’s Day, celebrated on March 8 every year. This year’s theme, ‘Rights, Justice, Action for All Women and Girls,’ highlights women’s rights and raises awareness of their issues.
The Sultanate of Oman attaches great importance to women, considering them active partners in development and nation-building. Women enjoy the support of His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik and the country benefits from their energies and competencies in various fields.
Statistics issued by the National Centre for Statistics and Information (NCSI) show that the total number of Omani women working in the public and private sectors reached 270,696 in 2025. Of these, 107,212 work in the government sector, while 163,484 are employed by the private, family and non-profit sectors, reflecting the growing presence of Omani women in the labour market and their contribution to various fields of development.
The Sultanate of Oman signed the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) by Royal Decree No 42/2005. This reflects the Sultanate of Oman’s commitment, like other countries, to the principle of engaging all society segments in the development process and underscores the significant role of women’s empowerment programmes. — ONA
