MUSCAT: The Ministry of Housing and Urban Planning (MoHUP) has launched a research initiative under the Strategic Research Programme to study ‘Appropriate Housing Unit Patterns for Regions in Oman in Line with the Housing Needs of the Omani Family.’

The project is being implemented in collaboration with the Global College of Engineering and Technology as part of the fourth cycle of the Strategic Research Projects Programme.

The study aims to ensure that housing models across Oman are better aligned with regional characteristics, socio-economic conditions and the evolving needs of Omani families, supporting the broader objectives of Oman Vision 2040 for sustainable urban development and improved quality of life.

Recognising Oman’s diverse geography — spanning mountains, coasts, deserts and rural areas — the research will analyse environmental and climatic conditions, socio-cultural factors, urban planning requirements, architectural design and access to public services. The goal is to develop region-specific housing patterns that are functional, sustainable and culturally responsive.

The project also seeks to enhance community acceptance of social housing initiatives and improve government investment efficiency.

Past experiences with low-occupancy housing units have highlighted the importance of matching housing designs to actual family needs and expectations.

By integrating research into policy development, the ministry aims to provide actionable guidelines for planning and designing housing under social housing programmes, creating adaptable and thriving communities across Oman.

The initiative underscores a knowledge-based approach to urban planning and the ministry’s commitment to evidence-driven housing policies.
