

CAIRO: The Majlis Ash'shura on Thursday took part in a meeting of the temporary Parliamentary Diplomatic Committee in Cairo. The meeting, which saw the participation of representatives of Arab parliaments, aimed to boost joint Arab parliamentary action and coordinate positions vis-à-vis current regional and international levels.

The meeting discussed ways to enhance Arab presence in international parliamentary conferences and to develop measures of coordination and consultation among Arab parliaments.
The committee looked into proposals to formulate a unified Arab stand that reflects the priorities of Arab countries towards current international issues.
The meeting discussed ways to prepare a coordination accord with the African Group in the International Parliamentary Union (Inter-Parliamentary Union) in a manner that consolidates joint Arab-African stands towards international issues.
The temporary Arab diplomatic parliamentary committee held a meeting with a delegation from the Inter-Parliamentary Union via video conferencing. The meeting reviewed the strategy of the Inter-Parliamentary Union. It also discussed opportunities for expanding areas of joint cooperation to exchange legislative expertise, upgrade capacity-building programmes and strengthen institutional dialogue channels, in addition to supporting coordination about issues of common interest at the regional and international arenas.
The meeting also underlined the importance of strengthening the role of parliamentary diplomacy in supporting international cooperation, promoting dialogue among parliaments and exploring ways to upgrade mechanisms of institutional communication between the two unions in a manner that fits with rapid international developments. — ONA
