Paris, France: Danish former world champion Mads Pedersen will undergo surgery after suffering a fractured wrist and collarbone at the early season Tour of Valencia on Wednesday, his team Lidl-Trek said.

A hand or wrist injury can be tricky to come back from for a cyclist and the Lidl-Trek rider will be in a race to enjoy the one-day classics coming up in March.

"The team's first priority is to ensure Mads gets the best care possible and the immediate focus will be on a successful recovery to minimise the disruption to his season goals," Lidl-Trek said.

The 30-year-old Pedersen has won stages on all the Grand Tours and won the road race world championships in Yorkshire in 2019.

Pedersen has won the Gent-Wevelgem classic in Flanders three times (2020, 2024, 2025) and the 2026 edition is scheduled for March 29.
