MUSCAT: The Ministry of Health (MoH) has issued an urgent appeal for O positive platelet donations to save the life of a patient requiring an emergency liver transplant in the coming hours.

In a statement, the ministry emphasised the critical role of a timely community response in life-saving situations. Platelet donations will be accepted at the Blood Bank in Bausher from 8 am to 7 pm, with eligible donors urged to come forward immediately.

The ministry confirmed that all donation procedures are conducted under strict medical supervision. Donors complete a health assessment form and provide civil ID or resident card verification, followed by haemoglobin and blood pressure checks.

The donation process typically takes five to 15 minutes, during which approximately 450 millilitres of blood or the required platelet units are collected. Donors are then advised to rest briefly and are provided with refreshments.

Highlighting the importance of voluntary blood donations, the ministry noted that regular contributions are vital to sustaining emergency medical services and supporting complex procedures such as organ transplants. The public is encouraged to continue donating to maintain national blood supplies.
