MUSCAT: The Sultanate of Oman, represented by the Environment Authority, marked the Gulf Wildlife Day, which falls on December 30 each year. This year’s celebration is held under the theme: 'A Society in Harmony with Nature for Sustainable Wildlife'. The occasion serves to reaffirm the commitment of the Sultanate of Oman and the GCC countries to protecting biodiversity, conserving natural resources and ensuring their sustainability for future generations.

The theme embodies the importance of fostering a balanced relationship between humans and the environment. It aims to instil concepts of wildlife conservation as a fundamental pillar of sustainable development and quality of life.

The Environment Authority emphasised that celebrating this regional occasion reflects the GCC's keenness to unify efforts in protecting wildlife and natural habitats. It also highlights the collaborative approach to addressing common environmental challenges, foremost among them being biodiversity loss, climate change and pressures resulting from human activities.

The Authority noted that Oman accords great importance to wildlife through the implementation of national programmes and projects. These initiatives aim to protect endangered species, manage nature reserves, and preserve terrestrial and marine ecosystems, while also strengthening partnerships with government and private institutions and civil society. - ONA
