Muscat: The Sultanate of Oman joined countries worldwide in observing World Suicide Prevention Day, with the Ministry of Health (MoH) reporting a marked decline in suicide deaths over the past year.
According to official figures by MoH, the rate of suicide deaths fell to 0.1 per 100,000 people in 2024, compared with 2.1 per 100,000 in 2023.
The ministry attributed this improvement to continued awareness efforts and growing attention to mental health support.
On this occasion, the ministry urged individuals experiencing suicidal thoughts to seek immediate help, whether by consulting doctors and mental health professionals, confiding in a family member, or sharing feelings with trusted friends. It also underscored the importance of community support in fostering resilience and saving lives.
World Suicide Prevention Day, observed annually, aims to encourage open dialogue on mental health, reduce stigma, and reinforce the need for timely professional intervention.
