A nation's National Day is not merely a date on the calendar; it serves as a reminder to its citizens of their unity — a defining characteristic —and showcases pride in the nation's founding, as well as the joy of sharing in its progress. These emotions are experienced by people of all ages and generations.
In the Sultanate of Oman, National Day is a time when the nation shines with happiness, reflection, and pride. It is a moment for citizens and residents to come together and express their gratitude for peace, safety, and progress.
The day serves as a reminder of how far the nation has progressed under visionary leadership and how deeply its cultural roots endure.
After living in this wonderful country for nearly 25 years, I can proudly assert that Oman stands out as one of the rare stable, cohesive, and thriving nations not only in the Gulf but also globally.
Although I am not currently in Oman and miss the amazing National Day celebrations, having been part of the Omani media, I am well aware of how these celebrations take place.
Television channels, radio stations, and online platforms broadcast special programmes dedicated to the occasion. Documentaries, cultural performances, and interviews with citizens and residents highlight the significance of the day.
Storytelling becomes a powerful tool during this time, as people share their personal experiences, family traditions, and memories connected to National Day. The digital age has enabled Omani citizens to showcase their celebrations to the world, spreading a message of unity and cultural pride beyond national borders.
I still envision the vibrant red, green, and white flags soaring high, colourful LED lights illuminating the streets, and the spirit of patriotism flowing through every city and village. Whether in bustling Muscat or remote villages, the same spirit is felt throughout the land. This shared celebration reflects national solidarity and love for the homeland.
The atmosphere becomes festive and heartwarming as Omani families and communities gather to participate in parades, cultural events, and fireworks. What makes National Day even more unique is the seamless blending of tradition with modern celebrations.
While traditional dances, poetry, and costumes highlight the country’s cultural roots, modern technology adds new dimensions to the festivities. Schools, government offices, and public spaces host cultural programmes and events that celebrate the values of Oman’s rich heritage.
But let me say that I still can’t believe it has been over three years since I permanently left Oman, even though I have visited a couple of times in between. It’s not that the time flew by, but rather that it feels as though I have lived a lifetime in this graceful country.
Over the decades, Oman’s leadership has guided the country with foresight and compassion. His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik’s commitment to welfare, education, and development has helped maintain the nation’s stability and prosperity.
National Day, therefore, is also a celebration of gratitude towards those who have led the country with dignity and ensured that its citizens live with pride and security.
Under its Oman Vision 2040 development plan, the country has been working towards achieving comprehensive and sustainable progress across economic, social, and developmental sectors.
To strengthen the role of various sectors of Omani society in shaping the future, this long-term development framework prioritises education, healthcare, and other social services to foster a knowledge-driven, diversified, and competitive economy.
One of the significant aspects of Oman Vision 2040 is its emphasis on comprehensive human and urban development. From a time when schooling was conducted under trees to today’s high-tech, modern buildings where children receive education, all testify to this phenomenal growth.
Definitely, Oman is a country that many others seek to emulate, particularly in its commitment to sustainability across industry, food security, the environment, health and education.
