SALALAH: The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources launched the Arabica Coffee Cultivation Project in Dhofar Governorate, in celebration of Omani Agriculture Day on October 31. The initiative aims to boost agricultural production, diversify economic crops and support sustainable mountain farming in the region.

The project seeks to revive Arabica coffee cultivation in Dhofar’s moderate climate zones by providing high-quality seedlings, technical guidance, modern farming training, and support for pit preparation and modern irrigation systems, helping farmers optimise water use and minimise losses.

Eng Radwan bin Abdullah al Ibrahim, Director of the Agricultural Development Department and Project Manager, said the initiative builds on the success of previous projects, including the Turmeric Cultivation Project (2022) and the Ginger Cultivation Project (2023).

Earlier trials in the Qirun Hirti area demonstrated promising yields with Arabica varieties such as Al Adini and Al Dawairi. The project is expected to increase farmers’ incomes, add value to the agricultural sector, and deliver environmental and economic benefits through sustainable cultivation practices.

The initiative targets 30 farmers in Salalah, Taqah and Mirbat, selected based on resource availability and readiness to adopt modern agricultural techniques. Farmers have expressed enthusiasm for the programme and intend to expand coffee cultivation in the coming seasons.

The Arabica Coffee Cultivation Project is seen as a significant step towards food security, economic diversification, and high-value crop investment in Dhofar, opening new horizons for sustainable agricultural development. - ONA
