MUSCAT, OCT 11

Oman Committee for Air Sports successfully concluded its Cross-Country Paragliding Exercise, featuring 85 Omani pilots from various governorates.

The event, designed to enhance technical flying skills and safety awareness, took place along one of the most scenic routes on Oman’s eastern coast.

Pilots took off from Dhabab in the Wilayat of Qurayat and glided across striking coastal and mountainous landscapes including Wadi Al Shab and Tiwi, before landing in Qalhat, Wilayat of Sur, a Unesco World Heritage site, the flight covered nearly 120 kilometers and lasted around four and a half hours, highlighting both the skill of the participants and the country’s breathtaking natural beauty.

The closing ceremony was held under the auspices of Ahmed al Balushi, Member of the Qurayat Municipal Council and attended by Dr Ahmed al Alawi, Chairman of the Oman Committee for Air Sports, alongside committee members and aviation enthusiasts.

Dr Al Alawi explained that the exercise forms part of the committee’s strategy to develop pilot proficiency and promote aerial sports across Oman, “the Dhabab-Qalhat route was carefully selected for its diverse terrain, moderate weather and cultural value, by combining technical flying with tourism, we aim to position Oman as a leading destination for aerial sports in the region.”

Al Balushi praised the initiative for boosting domestic tourism in Qurayat and Sur, noting that it showcased the potential of Oman’s coastline as a destination for adventure and eco tourism, also revealed plans for ‘Muscat Nights 2026’, to be held in January, featuring aerial demonstrations in collaboration with the committee.

RECOGNITION AND FUTURE PLANS

The event concluded with a recognition ceremony honoring participants and supporting organisations, the competition was also announced for the top three video clips documenting the flight, with prizes sponsored by the Middle East Air Sports Center and Sky Safari.

Dr Al Alawi reaffirmed the committee’s commitment to expanding aerial sports through strategic partnerships with public and private institutions, committee member Hussain al Fairouz added that this was the first national exercise uniting all affiliated paragliding teams, praising the success of the organisation and the enthusiasm of Omani pilots.

“This event reflects Oman’s growing presence in aerial sports and underscores how our skies, landscapes and spirit of adventure make the Sultanate of Oman a natural arena for flight.” Al Fairouz concluded.
