MUSCAT: Oman has successfully completed the nationwide shutdown of its 3G networks, replacing them with upgraded 4G and 5G infrastructure. The phased switch-off began in less densely populated areas in the third quarter of 2024, in line with a national strategy to modernise telecommunications services.

The Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) confirmed that the shutdown enhances energy efficiency and allows the reuse of spectrum for more advanced technologies. In July 2024, 700 3G stations were decommissioned across Al Buraimi, Al Dhahirah, and Musandam. A further 584 stations in Al Dakhiliyah were shut down in December, followed by 864 stations in Al Wusta and Dhofar.

In January 2025, the process expanded to the governorates of South Al Batinah, North Al Batinah, South Al Sharqiyah, and North Al Sharqiyah, affecting 1,835 stations. By the second quarter of 2025, a further 1,699 stations in Muscat were deactivated, with the exception of a few near Muscat International Airport due to technical requirements.

The 3G frequency bands have since been reallocated to support 4G, 5G, and IoT networks. In total, the upgrade affected more than 5,600 stations nationwide. As a result, Oman has achieved 99 per cent 4G coverage and 90 per cent 5G coverage. Additionally, the move has generated annual energy savings exceeding two million kilowatt-hours.

Oman is now among the first countries globally to complete a full 3G shutdown, demonstrating its commitment to embracing next-generation digital infrastructure. — ONA
