“Our project aims to elevate the fort into a world-class attraction, offering an immersive experience that connects visitors to Oman’s rich traditions,” explained Saif Suliman Alhadrami, the company’s CEO. His vision resonates through the air as visitors experience the fort’s breathtaking beauty and its dynamic offerings.
Unlike many Omani forts that often feel similar, Nakhal Fort breaks the mould. Its stunning architecture, beautifully preserved using traditional materials and techniques, integrates harmoniously with the surrounding Hajar mountains. Once the residence of the local wali (governor), the fort served as a venue for conducting marriages, mediating disputes, and meeting with townspeople. Today, it has been transformed into a museum that showcases the region’s rich cultural heritage.
The sheer scale of the multi-level structure, adorned with stunning ceilings and intricate decorations—including verses from the Quran—invites exploration and countless photo opportunities. With about 200-300 visitors daily, including busloads of mainly European tourists, the fort draws a diverse crowd eager to absorb its history and charm. Its modest entry fee also makes visiting Nakhal Fort a remarkable deal, especially compared to similar attractions in the UK.
As you navigate the seemingly endless staircase within, you’ll find numerous spyholes, intentionally designed to keep watch over the surrounding landscape. This tactical feature highlights the fort’s historical significance as a sentinel of trade routes connecting the ocean with Nizwa, the capital of Oman in its early days. Often referred to as the most photogenic fortress in all of Oman, Nakhal Fort offers dramatic views that leave a lasting impression.
The fort’s unique topography adds to its charm; it does not conform to rigid geometry, instead flowing naturally with the massive boulders on which it is built. From its lower level, which houses a data storage area, prison, and mosque, to the middle level which once served as the governor’s formal reception room, the fort’s design tells a story of function and tradition. The upper breezy level, reserved for men, now allows visitors a serene spot to survey the surrounding date farms, mountains, and the shimmering Sea of Oman.
In addition to its captivating displays and stunning architecture, Nakhal Fort stands as a platform for cultural exchange. Strategic partnerships with private and public entities have amplified its appeal. Visitors can participate in regular cultural events and workshops, connecting with local artists and craftsmen creatively. As a result, visitor numbers skyrocketed by 25% in the last quarter of 2024, with over 23,000 tourists exploring the site and marvelling at its features.
But the project’s impact stretches beyond tourism. The revitalised heritage market has become a thriving space for entrepreneurs and artisans, breathing new life into Nakhal’s businesses. The success of Nakhal Fort not only preserves the past but also shapes a sustainable and economically vibrant future for Oman.
