The Oman Open Tennis Championship, organised by the Oman Tennis Association, continues to be exciting and competitive. More than 200 players of various nationalities and age groups are participating. The championship is being held at the tennis courts of Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex in Bausher and will run until the 20th of next month. It is one of the most prominent annual sports events organised by the association, which aims to develop tennis in the Sultanate, encourage players to participate in distinguished competitions, and discover promising talents.
This year, the championship includes competitions across various age categories, making it a comprehensive platform for all ages and skill levels. The participating categories include: Under-8, Under-9, Under-10, Under-12, Under-14 and Under-18, in addition to Men’s Singles, Professional Men’s Singles, Women’s Singles and Veterans’ Singles (45+, 55+, and 65+). This diversity reflects the association’s commitment to providing equal opportunities for amateurs and professionals to enhance their skills while highlighting and supporting local talent.
Competition Results
The first two days of the championship witnessed intense matches in the Men’s Singles category. On the second day, Younis al Rawahi secured a decisive victory over Kinan Raghavan with a score of 6-0, 6-0, while Said al Haddabi triumphed over Mohsen 6-1, 6-2. Additionally, Abdul Rahman al Mirza defeated Al Waleed al Badi 6-2, 6-2 and Mundhir al Najjar beat Azan al Busaidi 7-5, 6-3. Laurent Frago overcame Abdul Rahman al Balushi 6-3, 6-2 and Vishal Mirani defeated Ashish Gupta 6-0, 6-0.
On the first day, Ayman al Amri secured a thrilling victory over Samrat Vyas 3-6, 7-5, 13-11, while Sheyan Sukumar defeated Raman Nath 2-6, 6-1, 11-9. Mudhar al Najjar earned a well-deserved win against Mohammed al Kaabi 6-3, 6-4, while Ali al Masahli won his match against Hussain al Lamki 6-1, 6-2.
Faisal al Balushi, tournament director, stated, "The first two days of the championship witnessed great excitement, and we look forward to more thrilling matches in the upcoming rounds across all categories. Our main goal is to promote tennis in Oman and provide a competitive environment for all players, while also preparing national team players for upcoming international competitions. This year’s championship has attracted wide participation from various age groups and nationalities, reflecting the growing popularity of the sport."
Al Balushi added that organising this championship represents a unique opportunity to develop national administrative and technical staff. He confirmed that the matches will continue daily, with a temporary break due to court bookings, before resuming until the final day of the tournament.
