Studying abroad offers students unique opportunities

The latest group of Omani school leavers are now ready to go foreign universities to pursue their further studies. Based on their final grades and personal preferences, these students will soon be exposed to a whole different learning atmosphere, developing their soft skills in addition to knowledge in their chosen majors.

There is little doubt that travelling and studying in a different country and context develops a young mind.

In addition to being exposed to new teaching and learning techniques, it also acts as an introduction to different ways of life, facilitating the adaptation of various skills like time management, punctuality and organisation.

Today, study abroad comes in various forms – from a month long stint at a language immersion programme, a year-long focus on study skills before deciding on a major, or a longer, 4-year or longer programme at the undergraduate or higher level. In all cases, the physical distance from childhood and school education contexts provides more challenging opportunities to learn and prosper.

It does not matter where a student chooses to study – neighbouring and regional countries offer students learning experiences which are culturally similar, ensuring comfort and familiarity. The further away one goes, the more challenging, and rewarding, the experience will be.

There are many advantages to studying abroad, most of which are familiar to many but are worth repeating. Broadening one’s horizons, creating networking opportunities and gaining linguistic and intercultural skills are some of the most important outcomes which can be measured.

Studying abroad exposes young minds to different ways of thinking and diverse perspectives to traditional ways of learning and doing. It introduces learners to diverse groups of students who share the same set of challenges, allowing them to grow together, often leading to lifelong friendships.

It also introduces youngsters to different cultural perspectives which challenge preconceptions of people and places. This leads to breaking barriers and opening windows of the mind to new ways of seeing and interpreting.

In our globalised world, employers also place importance on people who have diverse international exposure and experience. Working part time instils a work ethic and professionalism, training students to set priorities and manage time. In fact, companies and institutions value employees who are adaptable and are able to work with different people and contexts.

Studying and using the opportunities to work abroad also help youngsters in setting up their own businesses or take up careers in digital spaces. The learning opportunities, exploring available options and being able to think outside the box of traditional careers will surely help anyone who wants to return freshly energised and motivated.

There is no doubt that studying abroad is challenging for everybody. While some may cope with the challenges easily, others will struggle a bit more. In fact, not everybody has the personality or will to undergo these challenges, so orientation and counselling is essential so that students who are taking up this opportunity are sure of the repercussions of their choice.

However, once the adventure begins, there is no substitute to travelling and learning, with all the advantages it offers for a promising future.
