Beirut - At least six people were killed and 24 others wounded early on Wednesday when Israeli strikes hit central Beirut and the city's southern suburbs, the Lebanese health ministry said.
A loud explosion was heard in the Bashoura area, which had been targeted by an Israeli strike last week.
A building was reduced to rubble, according to a dpa photographer at the scene. The strike came after a warning from the Israeli army.
Earlier, the state-run National News Agency reported that one strike hit an apartment in the central Zokak al-Blat neighbourhood, where the Israeli military last week targeted a Beirut branch of theHezbollah-linked financial firm Al-Qard Al-Hassan.
Another strike hit the central Basta district, according to media reports. Witnesses in the Basta area said several explosions were heard.
All the areas hit early on Wednesday are located near Lebanese government buildings, particularly the finance ministry and the prime minister's headquarters.
The strikes came after Hezbollah launched dozens of rockets into northern Israel overnight.
