Muscat: Oman is making significant strides in its agro-food sector, achieving notable progress in production, exports, innovation and expansion across the value chain.

These efforts are primarily spearheaded by Oman Food Investment Holding Company (Nitaj), the food sector development arm of Oman Investment Authority (OIA) – efforts that have resulted in the expansion of its market reach, technological advancements, and support for local enterprises.

Significantly, products of Nitaj subsidiaries have reached over 35 countries worldwide, showcasing the global demand for Omani goods, OIA noted in its newly published 2023 Annual Report.

A prime example of this international success is the expansion of contract farming by Al Morooj Dairy Project. The number of livestock breeders contracted by the company increased dramatically from 457 in 2022 to 924 in 2023. This growth facilitated the commencement of camel milk exports to Saudi Arabia, with a significant agreement with Sawany Saudi Company to export 15,000 liters per day.

Nitaj subsidiary Oman Flour Mills Company has been recognised for its excellence and innovation. In 2023, the company received the award for the strongest Omani brand in the food and beverages category, establishing itself as the most trusted brand in Oman.

Oman Flour Mills has embraced technological advancements to enhance productivity and efficiency. The installation of the 'E-Robot' system in the feed mill and feed plant has significantly increased production and improved operational efficiency. This move highlights the company's commitment to adopting cutting-edge technology to maintain its competitive edge.

Additionally, Oman Flour Mills won the innovation award in the most impactful innovative projects category for economic development. The company’s dedication to excellence was further acknowledged with two institutional excellence awards: the commercial award and the factory of the year award.

Oman’s agricultural sector has also seen significant advancements. Nakheel Oman Development Company has begun production and operational activities for its organic fertilizer project, emphasising sustainable agricultural practices. The company has successfully expanded its products to eight new international markets, including Russia, Peru, Iraq, Libya, Egypt, Iran, Qatar, and the UAE, demonstrating the global appeal of Omani dates.

Furthermore, the completion of the Lemon Grove Project, with the planting of 100,000 trees, marks a milestone in Omani agriculture. Besides improving the self-sufficiency of lemons from 30 per cent to 60 per cent, the initiative will also capitalise on carbon credit opportunities cooperation with Petroleum Development Oman.

The launch of the "Rumana" (pomegranate) project in Al Jabal Al Akhdar underscores Oman’s commitment to supporting small and medium enterprises (SMEs). This initiative focuses on the agricultural tourism sector, creating 45 agricultural tourism rest stops.

These rest stops are categorised into three types, supporting 38 SMEs, thereby fostering local entrepreneurship and tourism. Oman continues to prioritise local employment, with an Omanisation rate of 74 per cent within the group, reflecting the country's dedication to integrating Omani nationals into the workforce.

Additionally, preliminary approval has been obtained for shareholders to enter as shareholders in the Al Namaa Poultry Project and the Al Bashayer Meat Project, indicating future growth and investment opportunities.
