Oman add cycling bronze in GCC Youth Games

Oman national cycling team succeeded in achieving a bronze medal on the second day of the cycling competition, as part of first GCC Youth Games in UAE, bringing Oman’s tally to 33 medals.


The cycling team was able to win third place in the team competition for junior category. The race was for 40 km in Abu Dhabi with participants of six cyclists for each team, where Oman achieved 3 hours, 5 minutes and 54 seconds (total times). The UAE team claimed the silver medal with a timing of 3:05:49. The Saudi Arabia team snatched the gold medal with a timing of 3:02:42.

Omani cyclists include Mohammed al Fadhili, Ahmed al Ajmi, Wase’ al Muqbali, Abdullah al Dara’i, and Qusay al Rubaie.


In equestrian competitions, Oman were ranked fourth (211.66 seconds) in team category of show Jumping. Qatar won the gold (195.31 seconds) while Saudi Arabia clinched the silver (188.63 seconds) and UAE took the bronze with an overall timing of 202.24 seconds.


The competitions took place at the Sharjah Equestrian Club on Wednesday, the hurdles height was 120 to 125 cm, according to the regulations of the International Federation for Equestrian Sports.


Oman volleyball team left the tournament with their fifth loss to the Bahraini team 3-0 with sets 25-21, 25-13 and 25-9. Bahrain won the gold, while the Saudi team took the silver and Kuwait claimed the bronze medal.


The Oman handball team seeks to compete for the bronze medal in the final round of competitions against the Bahraini team on Friday. Oman had a valuable victory over Qatar in the penultimate round by 28-29 on Wednesday at Al Bataeh Club hall in Sharjah. It was the second victory after defeating UAE 30-26 goals in their first appearance.


Hassan al Maamari, Oman handball coach said: After beating Qatar in the last moment we become closer to competing for bronze medal, especially after raising our score to 4 points. Oman and Bahrain have same opportunities to win bronze, that will make it a strong match.”

The Oman golf team began competing in individual and team competitions on Thursday, after the organising committee approved the participating list during the technical meeting on Wednesday. A field of 30 players from 5 countries, UAE, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Qatar, and Kuwait, are competing in the competitions from Friday to Sunday.


Meanwhile, Oman swimming team arrived in the UAE on Thursday, to take part in 24 games with eight swimmers.


Oman team include Mohammed al Farsi, Mohammed al Wahaibi, Moath al Shaibani, Mishaal al Kulaibi, Hilal al Mashari, Ibrahim al Wahaibi, Hussein Tariq and Ali al Hassani. The team is coached by Amer Ali with Ayman al Kulaibi as assistant coach and Ibrahim al Wahaibi as administrator.
