MUSCAT: The Oman Cycling Association will hold its National Cycling Championship on January 19 and 20.

The first race on January 19 will be an Individual Time Trial at Wadi Al Abyadh for 24 km while the second race on January 20 will be a road race for 116 km in Qurayat, according to the Oman Cycling Association (OCA).

The OCA’s signature OCA League Championship is nearing its completion by concluding the fifth race recently. There are only two more races to go in the OCA League.

Only Omanis can compete in the National Cycling Championship that will see the bulk of local riders in action at OCA League try their luck in the two-day race.

OCA League red-jersey holder Mohammed al Wahibi of Cycle KOM, Salalah Club’s Mundher al Hasani and Abdulrahman al Yaqoobi are some Omani riders who are in hot form ahead of the national championship.

Also in the reckoning are Oman Royal Army cyclists Said al Rahbi and Husam al Rawahi along with Salalah Club’s Mazin al Riyami and Bahla Club’s Saud al Mandhari.

OCA Chairman Saif al Rashidi said the two-day championship would be keenly fought.

“There are a lot of young Omanis competing in the OCA League. This championship will give them a good opportunity to showcase their skills,” Saif said.

“We at the Oman Cycling Association are thrilled with the massive local participation in the OCA League and expect the same in the national championship as well,” the OCA chairman added.

There will be individual trophies for Individual Time Trial and road races for the top-placed cyclists while team prizes will also be given for the road race, the OCA sources said.
