Al Suwaiq lift under-19 football league title

Muscat: Al Batinah North team, Al Suwaiq, were crowned the champions of U-19 football league following their 5-4 penalty shootout win over Saham as the match ended in a 1-1 draw at the regulation time in the summit clash at Al Rustaq Sports Complex on Thursday.


Al Suwaiq boys delivered an outstanding show to clinch the shield of the league and claimed the gold medals while Saham players received the silver medals as they ended as runners up. Al Khabourah club players bagged the bronze medal as they defeated Samail 2-0 in the third and fourth match playoff.


Khalif al Saadi accompanied by Al Suwaiq head coach Younis al Dhabouni received the league shield from Eng. Qutaiba al Ghilani, Oman Football Association (OFA) board member, who was the chief guest of the match in presence of both team’s officials. The chief guest also awarded the silver medals to the Saham players.

Al Suwaiq took the lead in the 17th minute of the first half as Muhannad al Saadi scored the opening goal after he received a perfect assist from his teammate Webran al Saadi to convert the ground ball inside the box to the target. Saham managed to equalize in the last ten minutes of the match as Al Yazen al Saadi scored from header after he received a cross ball sent by Salim al Farsi in the 84th minute. In the penalty shootout, Al Suwaiq’s goalie, Mamoun al Soli, was the star as he saved the penalties of Zakariya al Maqbali and Riyadh Abdullah from Saham team and he scored the last penalty to deliver a crucial accomplishment to his team.


At the U-17 football league, Al Suwaiq completed the league as runners up after they suffered a 2-0 loss against Sohar club who lifted the title of the league. Izki club, who is one of the latest clubs established, claimed the bronze medals following their win over Saham by 2-0 in the third and fourth match playoff.


Al Suwaiq junior teams impressed and excelled a perfect show this season while the senior football team is freezed based on the decision made by the Club’s board directors earlier.
