Suhar: The recent rains in the wilayats of Al Batinah North have added a dash of green to the area enhancing its soil fertility, greening mountains, and ensuring the continuous water flow in Wadis and springs. This surge in precipitation is expected to lead to a significant increase in crop yields, marking a promising season for farmers.
One of the most notable effects of the plentiful rainfall is the revival of soil fertility. The rains supply nutrients and create an ideal environment for plant growth. Farmers across the region have reported healthier crops and higher yields, attributing their success to the richness of the soil nurtured by the rains in recent months. Moreover, the greening of mountains has been a picturesque sight across Al Batinah North. The mountains and hills that were dry are now crowned in lush greenery.
Adil al Saidi said, “Al Batinah now looks like Dhofar in Khareef with mountains covered in grass.” This transformation not only adds to the natural beauty of the area but also provides habitats for various wildlife species.
The flow of Wadis and springs has been robust and continuous, thanks to the sustained rainfall. Dry wadis are now filled with water, supporting local communities with a steady supply of water for farming and domestic use. This uninterrupted flow is crucial for maintaining agricultural productivity and sustaining livelihoods. Not only that, these wadis and waterfalls attract tourists and encourage families for picnics to places like Wadi Bani Omar in Saham and Shafan in Al Khabourah.
As a result of the adequate water, crop yields have seen a remarkable increase. Farmers have witnessed bumper harvests of staple crops such as wheat, barley, and dates which can meet the demands of local markets and provide export opportunities. A farmer from Logan in Saham said, “This year we witnessed early growing for some crops like wheat and we expect more output than before due to the recent rains.”This excess production not only boosts the economy but also strengthens food security in the region.
