Economic ties between Germany and Oman have undergone changes throughout history including stages such as historical connections, trade and investment collaborations and strategic partnerships. Some noteworthy milestones in this longstanding relationship include the establishment of relations in 1972 and the signing of economic agreements like the investment protection and promotion agreement in 2010 as well as the double taxation avoidance agreement in 2012.

When it comes to trade and investment, the volume of trade between Germany and Oman in 2021 was 765 million euros. Germany holds importance as one of Oman’s economic partners particularly outside the oil and gas industry. Recently a delegation from Germany has been actively exploring investment opportunities in sectors such as renewable energy, gas, logistics transportation and food security. German investments in Oman have surpassed RO 10 million in 2022 while total trade between both countries reached RO 257.5 million by the end of November 2023.

The strategic partnership phase aligns with Oman's ambitious 'Oman Vision 2040,' aiming to diversify the economy and reduce reliance on oil. Central to this vision is the master plan for the development of a green hydrogen economy, where German expertise becomes pivotal. Collaborative efforts in solar, wind, and green hydrogen projects offer Oman an opportunity for sustainable energy development, contributing to its long-term economic goals.

Beyond energy, the strategic alliance opens avenues for collaboration in logistics and infrastructure.

Modernizing ports and establishing efficient rail networks are key focal points that can enhance trade flow and reduce costs for both nations. Germany's technological advancements and market access present opportunities for boosting Omani exports and attracting investments in manufacturing, tourism, and technology.

The Omani-German Joint Committee plays a crucial role in advancing economic collaboration through strategic meetings. This committee is dedicated to facilitating increased trade and investment in sectors such as energy, technology, culture, and science, further solidifying the partnership between the two nations.

Building on a foundation of success, the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS) is further strengthening the Omani-German partnership. This German think-tank is collaborating with Oman's policy and business community to unlock even greater economic growth and diversification. KAS takes a multi-pronged approach, empowering local actors, sharing Germany's proven strategies, facilitating knowledge transfer, promoting regional development, and fostering dialogue between Omani and German experts.

Oman's industries are poised to benefit significantly from German expertise in Industry 4.0 solutions and smart city development. Knowledge transfer through education and training partnerships will enhance the skills of the Omani workforce and foster innovation. Additionally, the partnership extends beyond traditional economic sectors to include sustainable tourism, healthcare advancements, and food security collaborations.

The trade dynamics between the two nations involve Oman exporting methanol products, polyethylene, aluminum, electrical materials, and food products like fish to Germany. In return, Germany exports vehicles, machinery, electronic devices, medicines, and assorted food items to Oman.

Key opportunities for Omani businesses:

• Renewable energy: Collaboration in solar, wind, and green hydrogen projects aligns with Oman's abundant natural resources, presenting a chance for sustainable energy development. German expertise in renewable energy solutions and technology transfer can be harnessed for mutual benefit.

• Logistics and infrastructure: Modernising ports and establishing efficient rail networks, with German expertise, can enhance trade flow and reduce costs. This collaboration can also open doors for partnerships in smart city development and digitalisation of logistics infrastructure.

• Industry 4.0 and Smart Cities: Omani industries can leverage German expertise in Industry 4.0 solutions and smart city development to modernise operations, enhance efficiency, and improve citizen services. Knowledge transfer through partnerships in education and training will upskill the workforce and drive innovation.

• Manufacturing and technology: German technology and market access can attract investments in Oman's manufacturing and technology sectors, creating new job opportunities and fostering economic diversification. Joint ventures and technology transfer partnerships can be explored in these areas.

• Sustainable tourism, healthcare, and food security: The partnership extends to sustainable tourism development, healthcare advancements, and food security collaborations. By combining German expertise with Omani resources, these sectors can witness significant growth and contribute to improved living standards.

In summary, German-Omani economic ties have matured considerably from initial trade contacts centuries prior. Both partners stand to gain from closer collaboration in Oman's development. As the diversification agenda unfolds, German technology and know-how can be paired with Omani energy resources, infrastructure demand and favorable location.

Understanding the landscape and nuances in detail would allow governments and businesses to unlock the full potential in this strategic partnership. With sound regulation and support sustaining the strong foundation already laid, German-Omani economic relations are primed for an increasingly productive future.
