Muscat: The Consumer Protection Authority (CPA) in Muscat recently managed to get a refund of RO17,699 for one customer who was provided a faulty new vehicle by a dealer.

As far as the history of the case goes, CPA received a complaint from one of the customers who claimed that she bought a new vehicle from one of the auto agencies.

After receiving the vehicle, she heard some unusual noise coming from the vehicle and took it to the agency but technicians affirmed that there was nothing irregular about the noise.

The consumer filed a complaint with CPA against the agency, which inspected the vehicle again and sent a report to the manufacturing company.

During inspection, it was found that the vehicle had a manufacturing defect and accordingly both parties agreed to make a settlement under which the consumer will return the vehicle in return for the paid amount.

This settlement was made as per the provision of Article 16 of the Consumer Protection Act, which states that a customer, within a period of fifteen (15) days of his receipt of any commodity, shall be entitled to replace, return, or refund of the value of the commodity without any additional costs if such commodity is defective.

CPA urged service providers to comply with consumer protection laws and regulations, honor their contractual obligations, and safeguard the rights, health, and safety of consumers. They are also required to ensure the safety of vehicles before sale through technical inspection to avoid defects after purchase.
