SALALAH: With the khareef season having all but receded in Dhofar Governorate, authorities are cautioning local residents and tourists alike about the risk of bushfires triggered by barbecue sessions, campfires or any the unsafe disposal of a burning cigarette butt during this time.

While the kKhareef season brings much-needed rain to Dhofar, transforming the landscape into an inviting haven for campers, these rains also leave behind plenty of dead vegetation, creating perfect fuel for potential fires. Furthermore, the approaching dry conditions can turn even a small spark into a raging blaze that can be potentially challenging to extinguish.

To preempt wildfires and ensure a safe camping experience, adhering to essential safety protocols is imperative, say authorities. Campers should always reach out to local authorities to ascertain any existing fire restrictions. Only approved fire pits should be used, and campfires should never be left unattended. Additionally, campers must be prepared to rapidly quell any fire outbreak.

"The Civil Defence and Ambulance Authority in Dhofar Governorate urges vigilance and adherence to safety measures. With the arrival of spring, known locally as 'Serab,' following the Khareef season, dry grasses and wind conditions heighten the risk of wildfires. Complying with the Authority's safety guidelines is essential to prevent such incidents," it said in an advisory on Saturday.

Here are some further guidelines for safe camping in Dhofar after the Khareef season:

1. Choose your campsite wisely: Opt for open areas, far from trees and shrubs.

2. Fire safety equipment: Keep a fire extinguisher or water hose readily available.

3. Never leave fires unattended: Even momentary neglect can have dire consequences.

4. Weather awareness: Be mindful of weather conditions, avoiding camping on hot, dry days.

5. Report any incidents: If you spot an unattended fire, notify authorities immediately.

6. Avoid lighting fires under trees or near dry vegetation.

7. Ensure your fire is completely extinguished before leaving it.

8. Dispose cigarettes and smoking materials with care.

9. Be cautious not to knock over hot coals or embers.
