Muscat: Salalah, known as the ‘Jewel of Gulf,’ is poised to captivate visitors with its natural splendour, vibrant culture and warm hospitality during the much-anticipated Khareef.

Starting on Wednesday, the Khareef season blankets the coastal regions of the Dhofar Governorate, creating a unique ambience until September 21.

The fall of Khareef is distinguished by characteristics like cloudy and rainy weather, accompanied by moderate temperatures. The high mountainous areas, enveloped in fog and gentle showers, create an ethereal atmosphere that sets Dhofar apart from other Arab Gulf states.

Organised by Dhofar Municipality, an exciting line-up of events and activities awaits visitors during the Khareef. Entertainment options are abundant, from the lively “Ateen Square” in the Ateen Plain to nostalgic activities in the Hafah area and the family-friendly “Kiddy Time” at Awqad Public Park. Nature and tourist sites will also host various engaging activities, ensuring a delightful experience for everyone.

Beyond the Khareef festivities, the Dhofar Governorate boasts a treasure trove of natural wonders and tourist attractions. With its diverse terrain encompassing marine, agricultural, mountainous, and desert landscapes and its inclusion of archaeological and historical sites on the prestigious World Heritage List, Dhofar offers a captivating tapestry of experiences.

Dhofar is renowned for its agricultural bounty, featuring tropical delights like coconuts, bananas, fava beans and sugar cane. The region’s abundance of creeks, natural water sources, and cascading waterfalls during the rain-rich Khareef season, particularly in August, adds to its allure. Moreover, Dhofar is home to thriving natural reserves teeming with diverse animal and marine life.

To make the most of the Khareef season, planning a visit to Salalah between July and August is advisable. During this period, the weather is ideal, with temperatures ranging from 20 to 25 degrees Celsius and humidity levels around 75 per cent.

Indulge in Salalah’s culinary delights by dining at the renowned Ittin Mountain Restaurants, where local cuisine takes centre stage. Specialities such as camel meat offer a taste of the region’s unique flavours and culinary traditions.

Adding to the allure of Salalah during the Khareef season is the Salalah Tourism Festival, organised by Dhofar Municipality. This immersive cultural event showcases a plethora of festivities and celebrations across different locations in Salalah, offering a glimpse into the region’s rich heritage and traditions.

During the Khareef season, Salalah is an enchanting destination brimming with natural wonders, cultural festivities and warm hospitality.
