An exceptional collaboration between the Colorectal Surgery Department at the Royal Hospital and general surgery at Sultan Qaboos Hospital in Salalah to perform colorectoproctology surgeries proved to be a milestone in offering the best healthcare to the public.
This groundbreaking initiative is aimed at providing outreach surgical services to remote areas, starting with Salalah, and marks a significant step towards extending specialised healthcare to geographically remote regions.
Under the visionary guidance of the Minister of Health and the dedication of the Royal Hospital administration, the collaboration sought to bring highly specialised services closer to patients, eliminating the need for them to travel long distances to access the care they require.
This joint effort exemplifies the commitment of the Omani healthcare community to prioritise patient well-being and ensure equitable access to medical services.
Led by Dr Manar Nassr, the Colorectal Surgery team embarked on a mission to address complex fistula in ano cases during their visit to Salalah. Over the course of this endeavour, the team successfully performed six specialised proctology procedures; fistula in ano, enabling patients in Salalah to receive the highest quality care without the need to travel to Muscat.
“The collaboration itself required meticulous planning and coordination, spanning a period of two months,” says Dr Manar Nassr, Head of the Colorectal Surgery Unit at Royal Hospital, who worked in collaboration with Dr Salim al Mashani, Head of Surgical Department at Sultan Qaboos Hospital in Salalah.
She further said that this synergy ensured a seamless experience for patients and exemplified the collective effort to bring specialised surgical services directly to their doorstep.
This collaboration not only expanded the availability of colorectal services but also played a crucial role in shortening the waiting list for specialised procedures.
This also aimed to empower surgeons to perform complex surgeries locally, patients can now receive timely and effective treatment, alleviating the burden of travelling long distances for medical care.
The success of this collaboration serves as a testament to the commitment of both institutions and the healthcare community at large in Oman.
