MUSCAT: Oman Hockey Association (OHA) will launch the first edition of 5s women's hockey league in line with Oman’s preparations to the host FIH Hockey5s World Cup in 2024.

The league will feature participation of more than 26 players who went through several internal camps in the national hockey women team. OHA is very keen to provide all kinds of support to the women’s team to participate in the World event, which will be hosted in January 2024.

Oman women hockey team was launched in last March in line with the 2022 Women’s Asia cup which was hosted in Oman in 2022. Japan team were crowned as the champions of the event.

The Hockey5s’ flagship event is a brand-new FIH competition. About 16 teams per gender (3 per continent + Oman, as hosts) will take part in this very first edition. Continental Hockey5s qualifiers for the World Cup will be organised in 2022.

Hockey5s is played with 5 athletes per team. It is particularly known for its non-stop end to end action, since the ball is in play for about 90% of a match, thanks to rebound-boards placed against the outside of the side-lines and back-lines. Furthermore, there are usually more goals with Hockey5s than with the more traditional 11-a-side format of hockey, since players can score from anywhere after the attacking line.

On the other hand, OHA will launch the first edition of the Premier League with the participation of six clubs, as the top tier league edition and top domestic competition for the game which will be distinctive and unique.

The other division of league will be the First Division league and this will witness participation of six clubs. The Competitions Committee decided that it was time to implement all international and continental standards to hold these high level of competitions.
