Oman's population sees a surge in 2021

Muscat: The population of the Sultanate of Oman increased 1.40 percent to reach 4,527,446 people by the end of December 2021, according to the National Centre for Statistics and Information (NCSI).


The data showed that the Omani population increased by 2.49 percent to 2,804,117 people, constituting nearly 62 percent of the total population.

Expatriates constituted 38 percent of the population at 1,723,329, which is a decline of 1.25 percent.


The Governorate of North al Batinah was ranked first among the top five governorates with the largest concentration of Omani population - 20.1 percent, followed by Muscat Governorate at 19.7 percent, Al Dakhiliyah Governorate at 13.4 percent, South Al Batinah at 12.9 percent and South al Sharqiyah 8.3 percent.


The population density of the Sultanate of Oman reached 14.6 people per square kilometer by the end of December 2021. Muscat Governorate has the highest density of 327.5 people per sqm, while Al Wusta Governorate has the lowest population density of 0.6 per sqm.


Residents of urban areas constituted 79.5 percent of the total population, comes residents in rural areas that constituted about 20.5 percent of the total population.


The proportion of men among the Omani population is 50.4 percent (1,412,508) compared to 49.6 percent women population at 1,391,609. The gender ratio is 102 men for every 100 women.


The youth and children groups (29 years and under) represent the largest segment of Omanis, constituting two-thirds of the Omani population, at 63 percent.


The gender ratio among expatriates recorded a decrease in 2021 with 360 males for every 100 females, as the percentage of male expatriates reached 78 percent, compared to 22 percent of female expatriates. The percentage of expatriates in the age group from 30 to 34 years is 20 percent. The youngsters in the age group 18 to 29 years old represent the largest segment of expatriates.


The male population of nationalities (Indian, Bengali, Pakistani and Egyptian) constitutes about 91.8 percent of the total male expatriates (1,723,329).


Bangladeshi nationals topped the expatriate population in the Sultanate of Oman at 38 percent followed by Indian nationals at 35.6 percent, Pakistan nationals at 15.3 percent, and the Egyptian population at 2.9 percent. The male Egyptian expatriates constitute the largest number of Arab expatriates in the Sultanate of Oman.


The female population of nationalities (Indian, Bengali, Filipino, and Egyptian) constitutes the highest percentage of female expatriates, at about 60.3%.


The statistics showed that the Indian female population tops the list at 33.1 percent, Filipino expatriates at 10.2 percent, Bangladesh female nationals at 9.9 percent, and the Egyptian women expatriates at 7.1 percent.
