Muscat: Dr. Ahmed bin Mohammed al Saeedi, Minister of Health, said that registration will start from tomorrow for the second dose to those who have exceeded 10 weeks of getting the first dose.

Speaking to Oman TV in an interview, the minister said that the Supreme Committee will meet on Thursday to take future steps regarding the ban, provided that the precautionary measures are put in place.

He said that in the Governorate of Muscat, when the registration was opened on Sunday, there was a possibility to vaccinate 11,000 people, but only 8,000 registered and only 6,000 came for vaccination as per the system.

He warned that some people listen to rumors and refuse to take the vaccination. "Most deaths reported at the local and international levels are from people who are not vaccinated."

He said that there are many reasons that led to the decline of the number of infections, which include adherence to precautionary measures, and vaccination as vaccines are the only tool to confront this disease.

The minister stressed that the results of the closure usually appear after 10 to 14 days and that the current results are promising due to the partial lockdown. He said the emergence of the “Delta” variant had led to an alarming rise in the number of new infections, which had decreased between October 2020 and January 2021.

Al Saeedi said that most of the infected cases in the Sultanate are due to the delta variant that affects people of all ages and added that the number of patients who were admitted to intensive care units directly from their homes has also increased.

The minister said the first dose vaccination for the age group 12-18 years will start before the end of next week.

Other highlights:

The lockdowns led to a drop in the number of infections by more than 50 percent.

Vaccinations are available for the category of 18 years and above

There is a cooperation between the Ministries of Health and Education to vaccinate the age group between 12 to 18 years with the first dose of 320,000 male and female students, which will help them to return to classrooms in the next semester.
