Oman’s commitment to peace, tolerance sets it apart

Ever since the early 1990s, the Middle East has rarely known a moment of true calm. Between sudden political shifts, internal turmoil, and ongoing struggles for regional dominance, the landscape has remained consistently volatile. Oman, however, chose a very deliberate path. By staying out of regional strife, Oman maintained itself as an oasis of peace and stability in the region.

Maintaining security and order in a region where violence can erupt at any moment is an extraordinary accomplishment. Throughout its modern history, the Sultanate of Oman has pursued peace as a way of life, conduct, and thought. Oman knows itself to be far above any acts that lead to or serve as a channel for violence. Any recent incidents were isolated individual acts carried out without the prior knowledge or influence of the state.

Acts of violence — or even vehement expressions of hatred — run directly counter to Oman’s foreign policy principles, as articulated by His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik since his accession to the throne, as well as Oman's inherited religious practices and social customs. Oman has always unequivocally denounced and condemned violence. Incidents involving the loss of innocent life — whether from terrorism or war — profoundly shock Omanis, who view them as tragic, deplorable, and deeply un-Islamic.

Omanis are staunch advocates of peace who naturally favour harmony over conflict. Omanis extend deep sympathy, compassion, and sensitivity toward anyone affected by such violence, frequently calling for mutual respect and tolerance across all faiths.

Demonstrating this moderate spirit, citizens and residents of Oman live side by side in the same neighbourhoods, share meals, and work in Oman in complete safety, regardless of their faith or background. By nature, Omanis avoid unnecessary disputes and verbal controversy. Their honesty, sincerity, and integrity are beyond question. Anyone visiting an Omani city or village immediately feels the warmth and hospitality of its people, along with the deep security provided by both law and custom.

As a dedicated peacemaker, Oman adheres strictly to a policy of non-interference in the internal affairs of other nations and opposes the use of force to resolve disputes. The world recognises Oman as a trusted, reliable mediator — always working with quiet conviction to reconcile opposing parties and end hostilities. Even when holding a differing opinion, Oman harbours no hatred or ill will. Instead, it exercises thoughtful restraint, seizing the right moments to restore harmony, honesty, and friendship.

These core tenets, fundamental principles, and enduring beliefs define Oman and guide the Omani spirit.
