

MUSCAT: The Environment Authority on Monday organised a specialised workshop for members of the 'National Committee for the Man and the Biosphere (MAB) Programme'.
The workshop aimed to review updates in the National Committee’s tasks and activities. It also discussed a draft plan for the management of Al Jabal Al Akhdhar Biosphere Reserve.
The workshop looked into the outcomes of the 38th session of the MAB Council, the Sultanate of Oman’s participation in a related international meeting in the Republic of Paraguay and Oman’s participation in the MAB Youth Forum.
The members of the National Committee were briefed about the main components of the draft management plan (for Al Jabal Al Akhdhar Biosphere Reserve) and measures to align the plan’s objectives with the strategic plans of relevant government sectors.
The workshop covered steps to form a technical team for monitoring Al Jabal Al Akhdhar Biosphere Reserve and Al Sareen nature reserve, in addition to the preparation of files on basic information for each reserve, including the reserve’s boundaries, environmental values and challenges posed to it.
The workshop elaborated on the framework of Al Jabal Al Akhdhar Biosphere Reserve’s plan and the reserve’s buffer zones. It also discussed a proposal to organise an interactive workshop to review programmes of conservation and environmental survey and to monitor climate change and sustainable ecotourism, as well as programmes of education, public awareness and stakeholder engagement. — ONA
