MUSCAT: Natural gas production in the Sultanate of Oman, including domestic output and imports, increased 6.5 per cent in the first five months of 2026 to 24.18 billion cubic metres, compared with 22.71 billion cubic metres in the corresponding period last year, according to data released by the National Centre for Statistics and Information (NCSI).
Growth was driven by higher production of non-associated gas, including imports, which rose 7.2 per cent to 18.81 billion cubic metres, while associated gas production increased 3.8 per cent to 5.37 billion cubic metres.
Demand for natural gas also strengthened across key sectors. Consumption by industrial projects rose 8.2 per cent to 12.39 billion cubic metres, reflecting continued expansion in manufacturing and industrial activity.
Gas consumption by power generation plants climbed 13.3 per cent to 6.58 billion cubic metres, highlighting rising electricity demand during the period.
In contrast, gas consumption in oil fields, including losses, meter discrepancies and shrinkage factors, fell 3.9 per cent to 5.12 billion cubic metres.
Consumption in industrial areas, including industrial estates and Oman LNG operations, declined sharply by 30.3 per cent to 79.40 million cubic metres, compared with 113.80 million cubic metres a year earlier.
The latest figures point to robust growth in both gas production and industrial demand, reinforcing natural gas's central role in supporting Oman's industrial expansion and electricity generation. — ONA
