MUSCAT, JUNE 27
The Omani Water Society (OWS), in its 26th year, is working on the Omani Water Encyclopedia. The compilation is expected to be the first comprehensive reference of its kind that specifically looks into water.
The initiative will serve as a national repository of knowledge, documenting the names, locations, and historical facts of water bodies across Oman. The book will also feature traditional practices, community initiatives and the heritage value of water.
The project has already drawn broad support from stakeholders.
"This pioneering project documents the central role of water in shaping Omani civilisation, from the traditional Aflaj irrigation systems to modern desalination and water management technologies," said Eng Zaher al Suleimani, Chairman of Oman Water Society.
The encyclopedia will have three key themes—historical origins, documentation of water resources, and modern developments. It would also include field surveys, academic research, expert interviews, and digital tools to create a comprehensive national reference.
The project is being developed in collaboration with Sultan Qaboos University, key ministries, and other stakeholders.
According to the officials at the OWS, "The initiative preserves traditional knowledge while providing a platform for future research and policymaking."
Another key achievement of Oman Water Society was officially registered in 2010 and now, for more than a quarter of a century, has been tackling a wide range of water-related issues.
"One example is 'produced water'—oil-contaminated groundwater generated in large volumes during oilfield operations and treated wastewater. It is a topic OWS has raised awareness of through scientific events and discussions," the chairman noted.
He added, "We have also addressed risks to aquifers from the various developmental activities and drawn attention to threats facing Oman's Aflaj irrigation systems from unregulated drilling."
