Muscat: The Oman Esports and Gaming Committee took part in the opening of the Iwan Oman Forum at Um Burda Al Ansariya School on Tuesday, as part of its wider efforts to raise awareness of esports and its growing role in youth development.

The committee’s participation featured an awareness session titled 'Esports... the Sport of the Future', presented by Asma al Yahyai, member of the Oman Esports and Gaming Committee. The session targeted school students and focused on introducing esports as an emerging sector that combines competition, technology, discipline and future career opportunities.

The session highlighted the difference between electronic games and esports, explaining how competitive gaming has developed into a structured field with professional tournaments, training systems, team management, specialised skills and expanding economic prospects. It also reviewed the main categories of games and esports, while underlining the sector’s growing importance from educational, social and economic perspectives.

Al Yahyai also addressed the key steps that young people need to follow to enter the professional esports scene, including skills development, regular training, digital discipline, understanding competitive environments and maintaining balance between gaming, education and personal development.

A key part of the session was dedicated to presenting an inspiring Omani experience through Shahad al Qaidhi, who was highlighted as one of the first Omani female players to achieve regional success in esports. Her journey was presented as a model for students, demonstrating the potential for Omani girls to compete, excel and build their presence in a fast-growing global field.

The committee’s participation in the forum reflects its ongoing commitment to spreading esports culture across educational institutions and encouraging young Omanis to engage positively with the sector. It also comes at a time when esports continues to gain wider recognition internationally, creating new pathways in competition, content creation, event management, technology and digital entrepreneurship.

Through such initiatives, the Oman Esports and Gaming Committee seeks to strengthen awareness among students, support national talent and promote responsible engagement with a sector that is increasingly becoming part of the future sports and digital economy landscape.
