MUSCAT: Oman’s electricity sector recorded strong growth by the end of March 2026, reflecting rising demand across residential, commercial and industrial segments. Preliminary data released by the National Centre for Statistics and Information showed total electricity production increased by 16 per cent to 10,544 gigawatt-hours (GWh), compared to 9,091.4 GWh during the same period in 2025. The expansion underscores sustained consumption trends linked to economic activity and seasonal requirements.

Net electricity production — which includes purchases by the Oman Power and Water Procurement Company and the Rural Areas Electricity Company — rose by 15.6 per cent to 10,216.1 GWh, up from 8,840.5 GWh a year earlier. This indicator points to tangible increases in end-user demand and grid utilisation.

By contrast, water production declined by 2.8 per cent to 118,412.6 million cubic metres. Muscat Governorate posted the largest contraction, with output falling 5.2 per cent to 46,259 million cubic metres, down from 48,787.4 million cubic metres. Production across other governorates also dropped by 2.4 per cent to 53,206.1 million cubic metres. However, Dhofar Governorate recorded a 2.5 per cent increase to 18,947.5 million cubic metres, indicating improved supply conditions or shifting seasonal demand patterns. — ONA
