In Oman’s evolving entrepreneurial landscape, a new wave of creative businesswomen is transforming traditional crafts into modern ventures. Among them is Zahra al Zadjali, founder of Sukar Studio, a brand dedicated to handcrafted natural candles and luxury fragrances that combine artistry with sensory experience.
A Business Administration graduate, al Zadjali’s journey began with a simple curiosity about handmade creations and aesthetic details. What started as small personal experiments gradually turned into a deeper passion when she discovered the artistic and emotional depth of natural candles and scents.
“I was fascinated by how candles can influence mood and atmosphere,” she explains. “They are not just products, but experiences that connect with people on a sensory and emotional level.”
Driven by this passion,al Zadjali sought to develop her skills professionally. With limited local opportunities in this specialized field, she pursued international training and enrolled in programs at the University of Nevada in the United States. Through intensive study and hands-on practice, she earned an international professional certification in natural candle making, becoming one of the first Omani women to achieve this distinction.
This accomplishment, she says, represents both pride and responsibility. “It pushes me to maintain a high standard in everything I create and teach. I also hope to inspire others to enter this field with confidence.”
Founded as a creative platform, Sukar Studio focuses on producing high-quality, hand-poured candles using natural ingredients. The brand also offers a range of carefully designed fragrances, aiming to provide a complete sensory experience. Each product reflects attention to detail, combining elegant design with functional quality.
A key element that sets Sukar Studio apart is its commitment to using natural raw materials and adhering to international quality standards. Al Zadjali emphasizes the importance of offering safer alternatives to conventional candles, many of which are made from petroleum-based substances that may affect indoor air quality and respiratory health.
However, building the brand was not without challenges. In the early stages, achieving consistent quality, particularly in scent formulation and burn performance, required continuous testing and refinement. Sourcing reliable natural materials that meet both safety and performance expectations also proved to be a demanding task.
Another challenge was introducing candles into a market deeply rooted in traditional scenting practices. In Oman and across the Gulf region, incense and frankincense are widely used and hold cultural significance. Rather than competing with these traditions, al Zadjali positioned her products as complementary.
“I wanted to present candles as an additional option that enhances the experience, not replaces it,” she says. “By incorporating elements inspired by Omani identity, such as frankincense and local floral notes, the products connect with customers while offering a modern touch.”
Creativity remains central to Sukar Studio’s identity. Al Zadjali draws inspiration from nature, daily life, and global trends in design and fragrance. This approach allows her to create unique pieces that reflect individuality and avoid repetition, helping the brand establish a distinct presence in the market.
In addition to product creation, Sukar Studio serves as a platform for education and skill development. Al Zadjali offers both professional training workshops for those interested in starting their own businesses, and recreational sessions designed to provide a relaxing and engaging creative experience. Through these workshops, participants gain practical knowledge and hands-on skills.
Reflecting on her journey, Al Zadjali highlights the importance of perseverance and continuous learning. “Success does not happen overnight,” she says. “It requires patience, dedication, and a clear vision. Believing in your idea and committing to its growth is what makes the difference.”
As Oman continues to support innovation and entrepreneurship, Sukar Studio stands as an example of how passion and creativity can evolve into a meaningful and impactful business.
