IBRA: Al Sharqiyah North Governorate is witnessing significant growth in its livestock sector, with new investments, expanding production and enhanced veterinary services contributing to the development of the agricultural economy in Oman.
Dr Abdulaziz bin Ali al Mashikhi, Director-General of the Directorate-General of Agricultural, Fisheries and Water Resources in the governorate, said that 7 new investment projects worth RO 33 million have been launched.
These include ventures in animal production, horse breeding, poultry and egg production, alongside ongoing projects in cattle, goat and camel farming, as well as dairy production.
To further boost investment, 14 opportunities have been offered via the ‘Tatweer’ platform, primarily focused on horse breeding facilities across various wilayats.
Additional proposals — such as Dutch rabbit meat production, ostrich farming and fertilised egg production — have also been received, with several contracts already signed.
Authorities are also developing large-scale livestock and fodder farming plans, including the ‘Sabsub’ project in Al Mudhaibi (4,000 acres, 14 plots) and the ‘Al Nakdat’ project in Sinaw (4,357 acres), alongside new plans in Sinaw and Al Qabil currently under study.
The governorate’s livestock population reached around 435,000 animals in 2025, supported by 7 government and 43 private veterinary facilities. During the year, 119,845 animals were treated, while 818,876 vaccine doses were administered, benefiting 6,660 breeders — a 24 per cent increase compared to 2024.
Production indicators also highlight strong sector performance. Poultry output stands at 3.67 million birds annually, with 126 million eggs produced each year—resulting in a 218 per cent self-sufficiency rate in table eggs. Milk production has reached approximately 255,600 cubic metres annually.
The governorate hosts 44 poultry production projects and 24 slaughterhouses (21 operational), with poultry meat self-sufficiency estimated at 40 per cent.
Officials noted that key projects — including Al Zain Farms, Al Jawba Feed Factory and Al Baraka Dairy Farm — continue to play a vital role in strengthening local production and enhancing food security.
Alongside investment and production growth, awareness initiatives and events are being conducted to support breeders and promote veterinary practices, in collaboration with academic institutions and community platforms.
