MUSCAT, FEB 28

The spirit of compassion and care for fellow beings makes the holy month of Ramadhan sweeter and more meaningful. Across Muscat, as twilight approaches, groups of volunteers can be seen packing and distributing iftar meals to commuters, labourers and onsite workers who are unable to return to their residences in time to break their fast.

As the month moves into its second phase, mass Iftars and food distribution initiatives across the country have become a blessing for many. Corporate houses, small traders, jewellers, money exchanges and community volunteers are stepping forward daily, underlining the true essence of giving.

In areas such as Ruwi, Iftar kits are distributed to hundreds of workers each evening. These gatherings, organised by individuals and companies alike, support labourers and those engaged in menial jobs who often struggle to reach home before sunset.

Long before distribution begins, beneficiaries gather near designated points. Soon, vehicles arrive carrying neatly packed iftar kits containing dates, water, fruits, snacks and other essentials.

One such volunteer-driven initiative in Ruwi, known as the 'Iftar Group,' has been active for the past eight years. Volunteers including Indu Baburaj, Anita Rajan, Lakshmi Kothaneth, Anirudh Adarsh, Baburaj Namboothiri and Rajan V Kokkuri begin preparations at noon each day. With support from organisations such as Lulu Exchange, Unimoni, Global Exchange, Rizan Gold, Amana Gold and Lulu, the initiative now prepares around 150 iftar packs daily for distribution at labour camps, taxi stands and bus stations.

“We are engaged in construction work in Wadi Kabir and cannot reach our camp in Wadi Adai to break our fast. This kind of iftar distribution is a real blessing,” said one labourer.

Sponsors say the effort brings relief and dignity to those who otherwise break their fast within the confines of their workplaces, far from family and loved ones.

While community Iftars continue across the city, a corporate initiative is adding a sustainable dimension to the holy month. Hilton Garden Inn Muscat has launched its ‘Green Ramadan Buffet 2026’, promoting environmentally responsible hospitality alongside the core Ramadhan values of generosity and solidarity.

The buffet blends traditional flavours with fresh, locally sourced ingredients, supporting Omani farmers while reducing environmental impact. A variety of wholesome plant-based options caters to diverse preferences within a warm Ramadhan setting that reflects togetherness.

The hotel has also taken steps to minimise food waste through careful portion planning and optimal ingredient use, while collaborating with charitable organisations to distribute surplus food.

“Through the Green Ramadhan Buffet, we aim to deliver an iftar experience that reflects the true spirit of the holy month and inculcate responsible hospitality that creates a positive impact in the community,” said Ozge Yilmaz, General Manager.

From roadside iftar packs to sustainable corporate buffets, Ramadhan in Oman continues to weave generosity, community spirit and responsibility into the social fabric of the nation.
