Labour Ministry rolls out professional classification system for industry sector

Muscat: The Ministry of Labour has announced the implementation of a new professional accreditation system covering occupational classification and professional licensing in the industrial sector, as part of efforts to regulate the labour market and enhance the efficiency of the national workforce.

In a statement issued on January 29, 2026, the ministry said the initiative is being implemented in coordination with the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Investment Promotion, as well as the Sector Skills Unit for Industry. The system will be applied to all establishments operating in Oman and covers a list of approved professions specified by the ministry.

Under the new framework, workers will be required to complete procedures to obtain professional classification certificates and licences to practise their professions through the official accreditation platform. The ministry stated that the phased implementation will begin on February 9, 2026.

Full enforcement of the system will take effect from May 1, 2026. From that date, the Ministry of Labour will not issue or renew work permits unless workers have obtained the required professional certificates or licences for the occupations listed.
