GENEVA: The Sultanate of Oman reviewed the progress and achievements it has made in the field of human rights since the third Universal Periodic Review (UPR) of human rights in January 2021.

This was part of the Sultanate of Oman’s participation at the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) of the Human Rights Council in Geneva, Switzerland. The Omani delegation is headed by Dr Abdullah bin Mohammed al Saeedi, Minister of Justice and Legal Affairs.

The Sultanate of Oman prepared its report through the Legal Committee, which held a series of meetings, workshops, and forums with numerous civil society organisations and government entities in the Sultanate of Oman.

The report highlights the efforts made by the Sultanate of Oman to join international human rights conventions, particularly the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, having previously joined the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights. This brings the country’s total membership to eight out of the nine core international human rights treaties. The report also details the progress made in enacting various human rights laws including those related to social protection, media, Omani nationality, organ and tissue transplantation, combating human trafficking, the rights of persons with disabilities and the regulations governing domestic workers.

Idris bin Abdulrahman al Khanjari, Permanent Representative of the Sultanate of Oman to the United Nations and Other International Organisations in Geneva, delivered a statement expressing the Sultanate of Oman’s attention to the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) mechanism of human rights. He emphasised the Sultanate of Oman’s official candidacy for the membership of the Human Rights Council for the 2028-2030 period for the first time. This candidacy stems from the country’s firm commitment to promoting human rights and is a result of its positive cooperation with various international human rights mechanisms.

During the session, the Sultanate of Oman received numerous interventions and recommendations related to human rights. These reflected the engagement of states with Oman's report submitted to the Human Rights Council and their eagerness to share their experiences and recommendations with the Omani delegation.

The Omani delegation participating in the Universal Periodic Review of the Human Rights Council at the United Nations headquarters in Geneva, also delivered responses and clarifications on a wide range of human rights-related issues raised by the 94 states participating in the review process.

The minister affirmed that all interventions and recommendations submitted by the countries will receive attention from the Sultanate of Oman, based on its conviction of the importance of the Universal Periodic Review and its role in developing human rights in the world. — ONA
